Most mirror breakage claims share the same root cause: the glass was packed like a carton of hardware. Mirror glass is stiff but weak in tension, a container is handled four or six times between factory, port, vessel and destination, and humidity shifts across a 30–45 day ocean leg put extra stress on the edges. What protects your order is not luck — it is a packaging system decided before the glass leaves the line. This guide covers what correct mirror packaging includes, how to choose between flat-pallet and wooden-crate packing, and the five checks to run before you book the container.

Why Mirrors Break in Ocean Transit

Four failure modes account for nearly all sea-freight mirror damage:

Every packaging component below exists to remove one of these four failure modes. If a packing proposal cannot be mapped to them, ask the supplier to explain it.

What Correct Mirror Packaging Includes

Component What it protects against
V-groove or corrugated separators between panels Edge-to-edge contact and point loading
Edge guards (foam or felt) on every panel edge Vibration chips at the weakest point of the glass
Corner blocks with reinforced corners Crane, forklift and transshipment contact
Pallet base with stretch wrapping Individual panel handling; makes the load one lifting unit
Moisture barrier (PE or heat-shrink wrap) Humidity cycles on long ocean legs
Weight and handling labels on all sides Wrong lift points and stacking on top
Wooden crate (large formats and tempered panels) Rigid outer box for oversized or safety glass

The test is simple: trace each component in the supplier’s packing list to the failure mode it prevents. A complete system covers all four; a partial one leaves a route open.

Flat-Pallet vs Wooden Crate: When to Use Which

Order profile Recommended packing
Standard sizes, full container load Flat-packed on pallets, separators and stretch wrap — most efficient use of cube
Oversized panels (gym and dance wall formats, e.g. 2440 × 1220 mm / 8′ × 4′) Reinforced crate or flat-pack with dedicated corner blocks, packed to keep the seamless installation sequence
Small or LCL orders, samples Wooden crate with dividers — small loads suffer more handling events relative to their size
Tempered or other safety glass Crate with individual wrapping — safety glass adds weight and the edge needs even more protection

A factory with its own packaging line sizes the system to the panel and the route instead of using one crate type for everything. If the quote does not state the packing system per line item, ask for it in writing before the order is confirmed.

Five Checks Before You Book the Container

  1. Packing spec in writing. Per line item: panel size, quantity, packing system, and a packing list that matches your order. If the gym mirrors and the bathroom mirrors ship in one container, the packing list must separate them clearly.
  2. Pre-shipment photos. Panels loaded on the pallet or in the crate, the crate closed, and the container loaded. Photos are the baseline that makes any later claim resolvable.
  3. Inspection report. A defined inspection pass before the goods leave — at WOSEN that is a 28-step pre-shipment inspection across six dedicated QC roles, with QC reports per batch available on request. The details are on our mirror quality & safety page.
  4. Damage-claim process. Ask how a claim is handled: who documents it, what evidence is required (photos, container seal, bill of lading), and what the replacement path is. A documented process is the difference between a claim that resolves in days and one that dies in email threads.
  5. Risk split in the Incoterms. The trade term decides who carries the risk at each stage of the route. Make sure the term in the quotation matches how you want the responsibility to sit — and for high-value glass, cargo insurance is usually worth the premium regardless.

How WOSEN Packages Mirror Orders

Packaging at WOSEN runs on an in-house line — the same factory that cuts and finishes the glass builds the pack, so the packing spec is designed around the actual panel size and weight rather than around a standard crate catalogue. Each batch passes the 28-step pre-shipment inspection, and every container is documented with pre-shipment photos. QC reports per batch are available on request, and the damage-claim path is defined in writing before the first shipment, not negotiated after the first breakage.

Because WOSEN is a full-range mirror manufacturer (bathroom, LED, standing, wall, makeup, gym and salon), a project order can mix categories in one container — one packing list, one quality file, one delivery schedule instead of several suppliers and several sets of paperwork. That is exactly how facility programs run in practice: see the commercial mirror bulk order workflow for staged delivery against a fit-out schedule.

Special Case: Large-Format and Tempered Panels

Gym and dance-studio walls are the most demanding transit case: panels up to 2440 × 1220 mm (8′ × 4′), often in multi-panel runs that must arrive as one seamless installation. Our gym line produces these formats — 2440 × 1220 mm full panels and 1220 × 610 mm modules — with reinforced edges and fixing specs matched to the room, and the packaging is scaled to match: dedicated corner protection, packing that preserves the installation sequence, and options for tempered safety glass where the location calls for it. The full specification is on the gym mirror page.

FAQ

Who pays if a mirror breaks in transit?

It depends on the Incoterms in your quotation — the trade term defines where risk passes from seller to buyer. Whatever the split, pre-shipment photos plus a documented claim process are what make a claim resolvable, which is why both are standard on our orders.

Can I inspect the goods before the container is sealed?

Yes. Pre-shipment photos are provided for every container, and third-party inspection before loading is welcome — send the inspector’s schedule with the order and we will coordinate access.

Do you pack different mirror types in one container?

Yes. As a full-range manufacturer we consolidate gym, bathroom, wall, LED and other categories into one shipment with one packing list — one quality file and one delivery schedule for the whole program.

How do you handle staged delivery for a multi-phase project?

Project orders can be split into production and shipping stages matched to your fit-out schedule. The bulk order page describes the workflow, including per-batch QC reports for each stage.

Is the packaging cost separate?

The packing system is specified per line item in the quotation, so you can see exactly what the glass travels in and at what cost. Send your panel sizes and quantities and the spec comes with the price.
